Decentralizing climate data to empower the land stewards who feed the world and protect the planet.
We believe every smallholder farmer deserves access to climate finance, carbon markets, and insurance — regardless of farm size or location.
Parametric insurance products that automatically pay out when satellite data detects drought, flood, or extreme weather — no claims filing required.
Decentralized MRV enables smallholders to issue verifiable carbon credits from agroforestry, regenerative practices, and land restoration.
On-chain climate data unlocks new financial instruments — green bonds, anticipatory cash transfers, and DeFi products for the world's most vulnerable communities.
Earth observation data verifies ecosystem health, enabling biodiversity credits and ecological impact monitoring across landscapes.
Breaking barriers for 33 million African smallholder farmers by making quality MRV services accessible and affordable through satellite data and AI.
Incentivizing sustainable agriculture through data-driven verification — ensuring farming practices restore rather than deplete the soil.
Shamba Network was founded in 2021 by Kennedy Ng'ang'a, a geospatial engineer whose own family members are smallholder farmers in Kenya. The research began in 2020, driven by a simple observation: the world generates petabytes of climate data daily, yet almost none of it reaches the people who need it most.
After five years at the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Kennedy saw firsthand how smallholder farmers — typically farming less than two hectares — were excluded from carbon credit markets and affordable insurance because existing monitoring and verification processes cost $30–50 per hectare.
What started as a centralized oracle delivering satellite data on-chain has evolved into a fully decentralized network where anyone can run a node, compute ecological indicators, and deliver consensus-verified results to smart contracts — with economic incentives that reward accuracy.
Exploring how satellite data can serve smallholder farmers through blockchain oracles.
Formally established Sep/Oct 2021. Receives Chainlink Social Impact Grant.
Live deployments in Laikipia, Kajiado, Gatanga. 3,000+ farmers reached.
Evolving from centralized oracle to permissionless node network with $SHAMBA token.
Geospatial engineer with over 17 years of experience in climate technology. Spent 5 years as a geospatial research assistant at the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), helping smallholder farmers improve yields and adopt sustainable practices. Several family members are smallholder farmers, giving him a deeply personal connection to the problem Shamba solves. Active in Web3 since 2017.
Co-Lead of WS4: Ground Truthing & Social Verification — shaping global standards for decentralized monitoring, reporting, and verification in carbon markets.

VisitWhat started with a single founder has grown into a global ecosystem of builders, partners, and grassroots organizations.
Shamba operates as a globally distributed team, headquartered at Kenyatta Road, Juja, Kenya (near Nairobi). The core team of approximately 7 full-time members has sustained operations on early-stage funding including Gitcoin grants and accelerator support from Outlier Ventures' Filecoin Base Camp.
Beyond the core team, Shamba's ecosystem spans approximately 40 Web3 partners and 120–130 grassroots partner organizations across East Africa and beyond, with a growing advisory network of domain experts in climate science, blockchain infrastructure, and development finance.
